Until the year 1915, there seem to be no major changes to the design and structure of the volleyball ball. Introduction of beach volleyball seems to have changed the structure and construction to a considerable level. The ball circumference was increased to 68.58 centimeters. The exterior leather layer was roughed up slightly to a higher level.

This new design was an 8-panel one. After testing, it was proven that the newer lesser-paneled ball offered more accuracy to players. It was also developed with dimples that played to the flight pattern of the ball. Interestingly, this was the first time the design of the volleyball had changed throughout its 100-year history in sports.
For the Olympic indoor volleyball competition in 2008 the company Mikasa developed and manufactured a new design. This new ball has an eight-panel design to allow more hand contact on the ball for improved accuracy. The ball has dimples which are meant to create a truer flight pattern.
